Please forgive

Some of the deepest inner work we can do is around forgiveness.

So I’d like you take a moment and write down the definition of forgiveness. Just go with whatever comes up for you without looking it up or trying to remember what your Sunday school teacher said.

My definition of forgiveness for a very long time was something like pardoning someone for their wrongs against me. But then I came across a more powerful concept: that forgiveness is letting go of resentment.

Whoa! Did that hit you in the same way it did me?

It takes the idea of forgiveness from the external—pardoning someone else—to the internal. When you let go of resentment, that is an entirely internal process. And it means you take full responsibility for controlling your mind, which yoga teaches us is the fastest and only way to true inner peace.

The other thing it does is takes “wrong” right out of the equation. You no longer have to spend a lot of energy noticing all the ways someone else has wronged you. Or you believe they’ve wronged you. Because, let’s be honest, we’ve all had times where we made up stories in our head about how someone did me wrong, but either it was a case of reading something more into it than was there, or we were just plain wrong about it. Like the time you blamed your little brother for hiding your book when you just forgot that you left it out in the back yard.

And finally, we can say we have pardoned someone, but still harbor a lot of resentment inside. But if we let go of resentment, then, well, it’s really gone. And then the situation no longer has any negative control over us. We are at peace.

So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write down a situation that you are feeling resentment about. Then commit to releasing that resentment. And stay with it for as long as it takes.

Tip: You may need to start building your forgiveness muscles on something minor first. Then as you master completely letting go of resentment for something small, you can work your way up to more challenging situations.
